The short answer

List an internship like a job: title, organisation, location, months and years, then two to four bullets on what you did and what came of it. Put it in your Experience section while you're early in your career, keep "Intern" in the title, and shorten or drop internships once you have a few years of full-time work.

Where internships go

  • Student or graduate: in "Experience" (or "Work Experience"), newest first, alongside any jobs.
  • Several internships and no jobs yet: you can title the section "Internship Experience".
  • A few years into your career: keep only the internships that are relevant, below your jobs.

How to write the entry

Use the same layout as your jobs so the page stays consistent. Then write bullets about your contribution, not the programme. "Attended meetings" and "Assisted the team" say nothing; what you produced does.

Internship entry
Before

Internship at Halden Bank, summer 2025 Assisted the finance team with various tasks

After

Finance Intern · Halden Bank · Leeds · 06/2025 – 08/2025 • Reconciled 300+ supplier invoices a week in SAP • Built an Excel tracker that cut month-end reporting by half a day

Use the real title

Keep "Intern" or "Trainee" in the title: "Marketing Intern", not "Marketing Manager". Employers verify titles, and a three-month senior role looks wrong anyway. Let the bullets show the level of what you did.

Short, unpaid and remote internships

  • Short placements of a few weeks still count. Give the real dates.
  • Unpaid internships are listed the same way. There's no need to mention pay.
  • Remote internships: write "Remote" as the location.
  • An internship that led to a job offer: say so ("Offered a full-time role at the end of the internship").

When to remove internships

After two or three years of full-time work, cut internships down to a single line each, or remove them unless they're at a well-known employer or directly relevant to the job. The space is worth more for recent achievements.

Checklist

  • Each internship has a title, organisation, location and month–year dates
  • The title includes "Intern" or "Trainee"
  • Two to four bullets describe what you produced
  • At least one bullet has a number or a tool name
  • Older internships are shortened once you have full-time experience

Let Your Resume Check Itself.

The ATS Review runs instant checks as you type, including impossible or overlapping dates, years of experience your history doesn't cover, headlines that don't match your jobs and credentials you mention but don't list. The ATS check then points out contradictions between your titles, bullets and claims. Each issue links to the exact line to fix.

Do internships count as work experience?

Yes, for the purposes of a resume. List them in your Experience section. When counting years of experience, many people mention them separately.

Should I list an unpaid internship?

Yes. What matters is the work you did, not whether it was paid.

How do I list an internship I haven't finished?

Give the start date and "Present", and write the bullets in the present tense.

How many internships should I include?

All of them while your resume is short. Once you have jobs to show, keep only the most relevant one or two.
